Compress PNG Online Free: Reduce PNG File Size Without Losing Quality

PNG files are large by design. Their lossless compression preserves every pixel, which is excellent for accuracy but terrible for web performance. Our free PNG compressor converts PNG to AVIF, shrinking file sizes by 75 to 85% while keeping full alpha channel transparency.

Why Are PNG Files So Large?

PNG uses DEFLATE compression, which is lossless. Every pixel value is stored exactly as it appears in the image. For photographs, this means files of 1 to 5 MB are common even at modest resolutions. A 1200x800 photograph stored as PNG typically weighs 2 to 3 MB.

PNG was designed for graphics, screenshots, and images where perfect pixel accuracy matters: logos, UI elements, diagrams, and images with hard edges on transparent backgrounds. For these use cases, the large file size is the cost of lossless quality. For web delivery, that cost is unnecessary in most situations.

The problem: Developers routinely save product photos, hero images, and blog post images as PNG "for quality." The result is pages that weigh 5 to 10 MB in images when they need not weigh more than 1 MB.

How Much Does AVIF Compress PNG Files?

PNG Image Type PNG Size AVIF Size Saved
Product on transparent bg380 KB60 KB-84%
Logo with transparency48 KB8 KB-83%
Screenshot (1440px)1.3 MB175 KB-87%
Photograph (1200x800)2.7 MB58 KB-98%
UI illustration95 KB22 KB-77%

Savings are largest for photographic PNG files because lossy AVIF compression is being compared to lossless PNG. For screenshots and graphics with flat colors, savings are still substantial at 75 to 87%.

Does Compressing PNG Destroy Transparency?

No. AVIF supports full alpha channel transparency, identical in capability to PNG. When you upload a PNG with a transparent background, the output AVIF file preserves that transparency completely. Logos, product cutouts, and UI elements with transparent areas all work correctly.

The compressed AVIF file renders the transparent areas the same way as the original PNG in any browser that supports AVIF (Chrome, Firefox, Safari 16+, Edge). For browsers without AVIF support, serve the original PNG using the HTML <picture> element as a fallback.

When to Keep PNG and When to Switch

Keep PNG for:

  • Source files and assets you will edit again in Photoshop or Figma
  • Favicons (browsers expect PNG or ICO)
  • Images going into print production workflows
  • Archival copies where pixel-perfect accuracy is required

Compress to AVIF for:

  • All web-delivered images, including those with transparency
  • Product images in e-commerce
  • Logos and brand assets in blog posts and landing pages
  • Any image where page load speed matters

Best Quality Settings for Compressing PNG

Quality 80
Best for logos and graphics with sharp edges and flat colors. Preserves hard boundaries and text legibility at a fraction of the PNG size.
Quality 65
Best for product images with transparent backgrounds (cutouts). Saves 80 to 85% compared to PNG. Visual difference is imperceptible at normal screen resolutions.
Quality 50
Best for thumbnails and small images displayed in grids. Maximum compression with no visible quality difference at display sizes under 300px wide.
